A CHURCH complex in Oswestry has submitted plans to make their signs ‘aesthetically pleasing’ in the town centre and help it be clearly identified.

The plan, submitted last month to Shropshire Council, is for Hope Church, in Market Gate, is to replace temporary signage at its new facility off Salop Road.

The application added that it was the plan to both clear up identification and directions to the church but also improve the vision for the town.

A planning and access statement said: “The proposed plan aims to establish a consistent, aesthetically pleasing and user friendly signage solution for identifying, and navigating to, Market Gate Street, the individual retail units and Hope Church.

“Due to the construction of the new Church building, the removal of previous signage from the Market Gate entrance area, and the recent temporary signage solutions employed by retailers, a comprehensive and well-designed signage plan is now essential.

“This will not only address the immediate need for clear identification of the church, retail units and Market Gate street area, but also improve the local amenity/appearance by removing the temporary signs that have been erected by individual business owners on the complex.”

It added that the Market Gate site encompasses Hope Church and the complex of office and retail units.

The Market Gate site and all buildings are currently in the ownership of Hope Church Oswestry, Charity number and there is one sign in this application that is proposed to be sited on land adjacent to the Market Gate site, on land owned by Oswestry Town Council.

It added: “The land is clearly marked and permission has been sought from the council for the sign.

“The Market Gate site itself sits to the south of a major road (English Walls), which can be accessed from either English Walls or alternatively through a number of pedestrian paths including Salop Road (Market Gate Street) and from the Smithfield Market public car park located to the south of the site.

“The site, including the Market Gate street pedestrian area in between Hope Church and the Office/Retail Units, is privately owned by Hope Church, but access is permitted by the public when the gates are opened.”

The plans are currently at the consultation stage with Shropshire Council, closing on Thursday, August 15 with a decision expected on Thursday, September 10.
