ASBESTOS discovered at the proposed Oswestry Innovation Park at Mile End has been reported and isolated as part of planning conditions.

An application for a partial discharge of condition 10d – any further contamination found that was not previously found should be reported to the council writing – was made on Tuesday, July 30, by WSP Planning Services.

According to a letter from Joshua Scales, a senior town planner at WSP – acting on behalf of the council who is behind the development – the substance was found on July 18 this year.

He wrote: “Acting on behalf of Shropshire Council, we are writing to notify the Local Planning Authority (LPA) that further contamination that was not previously identified has been found at the Oswestry Innovation Park site, specifically at the Road 3 site.

“Condition 10 (parts a & b) attached to planning permission 21/01334/EIA in respect of the area relating to Roads 2 and 3 required a Site Investigation Report and a Remediation Strategy to be submitted to and approved by the LPA.

“The Site Investigation Report and Remediation Strategy were submitted to the LPA on 21 December 2023.The LPA discharged Condition 10 (parts a & b) in respect of the area relating to Roads 2 and 3 on January 19, 2024 (LPA Ref. 23/05524/DIS refers).

“Condition 10 (part d) Following the commencement of works on June 2024, further contamination that was not previously identified in the form of asbestos was found at the Road 3 site on July 18, 2024 as shown on the enclosed drawing titled “Road 3 Asbestos Location Plan”.

“Accordingly, this letter is intended to notify the LPA of this in accordance with Condition 10 (part d).

“The contractor has isolated the area and separated this contaminated material from other stockpiles.

“Remediation will take place in accordance with the Remediation Strategy discharged under LPA Ref. 23/05524/DIS. The Remediation Strategy is enclosed with this letter for reference.

“We trust that the information provided is sufficient to partially discharge Condition 10 (part d) in respect of the area relating to Road 3 at Oswestry Innovation Park.”

Work at Mile End is well underway and will bring a four-phase development as part of the expansion, with a hotel and a mixture of retail, hospitality and office units, plus housing.
