OSWESTRY kept their season alive with a thrilling 29-24 win at home to Telford the North Midlands Cup on Saturday.

The Eagles now await the outcome of this weekend’s clash between Telford and Newport to discover who they face in the semi-final.

Joe Capener marked his return to the first team by opening the scoring with the first try after good work by Jed Corbett.

Telford were soon back in the Oswestry half and showed their power as they drove over their first try with a successful conversion.

In this see saw match Oswestry fought back and once again Corbett created another opportunity by passing the ball to Nathan Sumang whose pace was too much for the defence as he crossed for another unconverted home try.

Oswestry returned to the Telford half where Jed Corbett once again made a great run and fed Ed Evans to barge his way over the line and Corbett converted to establish a 10 point lead.

However Oswestry could not defend their lead and the visitors hit back to level with two unconverted tries before the break.

Oswestry kicked off the second-half and after several minutes of intense pressure both Telford’s Denham Samuels and Oswestry’s Ed Evans were both given a yellow card.

Oswestry continued to attack and Dewi Hyde passed to Craig Richardson-Howell then on to Corbett who was able to run through and score.

Telford went on the attack in the Oswestry half and Corbett managed to intercept a pass from just inside his half and charge through running from over the half way line to score the fifth Oswestry try which he converted as the home side closed on glory.

Telford managed to score another try and set up a nervous finale.

With a five point difference Telford applied all the pressure to get another score before the end of the match but the hosts held firm for glory.

Meanwhile Oswestry IIs fell to a 40-26 defeat at home to West Park IIIs in NOWIRUL MAS Optimal Division Five West.

The match was switched with the Liverpool club’s ground unavailable with the home side going into the game with the bare 15.

Tries from Dan Lawrence, Peter Nelhans, Tom Cope and Gareth Marriott kept the Eagles in the game after injuries to Bob Tyrie, Mark Jones and Danny Jones saw them end the match with just 13 men.

Oswestry now look ahead to the final of the NOWIRL Plate on May 4th when they travel to Buxton in Derbyshire to take on Dukinfield IIs hoping to bring silverware back to Shropshire.
