Flash flooding has hit areas near Oswestry after severe rain from Storm Bert.

Police have issued warnings to stay away from Gobowen and Bronygarth after heavy rain and melting snow led to flash flooding this afternoon (November 23).

The area near the station has pooled with water with Police saying the area was suffering from congestion as a result.

Multiple videos circulated online show fast flowing water covering roadways in the village several inches deep in many places.

An officer part of Oswestry Safer Neighbourhood team said: “Heavy rain has caused flooding in Gobowen. This has caused some congestion on the Cross.

“Rail crossing has been flooded and trains have stopped running north and south bound. Network rail engineers on site.”

Teams from Shropshire Highways and Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service have all been called to the scene and have been onsite for a few hours.

Crew Manager James Lewis said "Shropshire fire and rescue service, Network Rail and Shropshire Highways have been actively managing the flooding on Station Road, Gobowen.

"Crews have been on-site working to address the situation. Sandbag deliveries are ongoing to help protect properties in the affected area.

"Tankers are being used to pump water at the culvert to reduce the flow.

"The road over the crossing remains closed to vehicles. Despite this, some drivers have attempted to cross, which poses significant safety risks. Please respect the closure and use alternative routes.

"We urge residents to avoid walking or driving through floodwaters."

Along with this, the force has said that there is severe flooding in Bronygarth leading to a walls falling apart.

In another update a local officer said: “Road is closed in Bronygarth near to Brookside. Wall has collapsed due to severe flooding.”

Shropshire Council has warned that “Storm Bert has resulted in some difficult driving conditions across the county.

“Our teams are working across the network however we are unable to attend every location.

“Due to the intense rainfall and saturated catchments is possible that some sections of highway will be flooded but will not be signed. Drivers should consider if their journey is necessary and drive with caution.”

Residents have advised to “avoid going into Gobowen from the orthopaedic roundabout” as the road is “badly flooded”.
