OSWESTRY’S Post Office will be the subject of an extraordinary town council meeting, to be held next week.
It will take place next week to discuss the potential closure of Oswestry's Post Office in Willow Street and consider what action the council can take to protect this vital community service.
The meeting has been called for Wednesday, November 27 – from 7pm – by Oswestry town mayor Councillor Mike Isherwood who said they wanted to address concerns for the public.

He said: “Many councillors, Oswestry residents and those of neighbouring parishes will be extremely concerned to read that the Oswestry branch of the Post Office is at risk of closure.

“The branch provides a range of important services to our community, and it is vital that these are safeguarded.”
The meeting will be at The Guildhall on Wednesday, November 27 at 7pm.
A spokesman added: “This is a council meeting which is open to members of the public to attend either in person or virtually.
“The agenda includes an opportunity for members of the public to ask questions during the public participation section at the beginning of the meeting, elected members will then discuss the matter in hand.”
Motions have also been submitted to town clerk Arren Roberts ahead of the meeting.
The four Lib Dem councillors – James Owen, Rosie Radford, Jay Moore and Jonathan Upton – have proposed writing to Post Office Ltd to request Oswestry be spared from closure.
Spokesman for the Greens and Shropshire councillor Duncan Keer’s motion added: “This council expresses its complete opposition to any partial or complete closure of the Post office and urges our MP to make the strongest representations in Parliament.”
He also invoked the Equalities Act as a way of maintaining the town’s branch.
Conservative councillor Les Maguire also submitted a motion setting our four points for the council to follow.

He said: “The council publicly opposes the proposed closure of Oswestry’s Post Office and call on all stakeholders, including the management and local representatives to work together to find a solution that keeps this essential service in our town.”
Cllr Maguire also called for a coordinated effort with local groups to oppose it.
The agenda for the meeting also stated that Cllr Martin Bennett, from Oswestry Rural Parish Council, had written to the council to express his concerns.
