Train passengers from Oswestry could be set for a new fine if they try to travel without a ticket.

Transport for Wales have confirmed that their expansion of their Penalty Fare Zone which will now include the line from Gobowen to Chester.

The expansion which is set to kick in on Monday (November 18) will see passengers who try to travel without a ticket being given a penalty fare of £20.

Transport for Wales have added that this “penalty may increase to £100 in the future (as currently applicable to Penalty Fare Zones operated by other train companies as well as TfW services between Shrewsbury and Birmingham International)”.

The new fine system will now affect people using the stations at Gobowen, Chirk Ruabon, Wrexham General and Crewe. The direct route from Shrewsbury to Crewe was already part of the zone.

A spokesperson for Transport for Wales said: “From Monday 18 November 2024, the TfW Penalty Fare Zone is expanding across the north of our Network, if you travel without a valid ticket, or without tapping in (where Pay As You Go is live), you may have to pay a Penalty Fare (£20 or twice the full single fare applicable to your journey, whichever is greater).”
