Oswestry Town Council has issued an online apology after the bonfire night fireworks in Cae Glas park was hit by long delays and complaints over crowd control.

Residents were left furious after the town’s fireworks display on Saturday (November 2) which was described by various members of the public who attended as a “shambles”.

Online forums were filled with complaints about the event which saw the display delayed for over an hour because of “safety reasons".

Members of the public described being asked to move from fencing as it was “too close” to the display which one attendee pointed out was “strange” as “everyone is standing behind the fences installed by organisers”.

OTHER NEWS:

Residents claimed there was poor management of the people at the event with some being asked to moved into already crowded areas, and others saying there was “no clear management and crowd control”.

There were also several complaints about “extremely poor” communication from officials which frequently could not be heard by the public.

Multiple people reported that they left the event early due to the long wait and difficulties with the crowd control.

In a post online a spokesperson for Oswestry Town Council said: “Thank you for your support and patience when attending tonight’s firework display.

"We apologise for the delay in firing which was for safety reasons. We are aware that there were a number of issues, we will undertake a review to address these.

“First and foremost, we are very sorry for the delayed start to the fireworks which was for safety reasons. There were several other issues on the night which we are reviewing, including lack of communication and layout of the venue.

“We have worked with Borderland Rotary Club to host a free fireworks display in Oswestry for several years, and this is the second one to be held at the park. The last thing any of us wanted was for families to leave feeling disappointed and let down. Our apologies again. We are taking all comments on board so that lessons can be learned for any future displays.”
