A fundraising quiz night is being organised in Ellesmere to help provide food, medicine and other essentials for children suffering in some of the world’s worst disaster areas.

Volunteers from the branch of the Save the Children charity are asking people to support the event at the town’s Comrades’ Club, in Victoria Street, on Wednesday evening, November 13 starting at 7 pm.

Branch secretary Jean Ferries said with many children caught up in numerous conflicts around the world, as well as famine, the group wanted to do as much as they could to help them.

She said: “As part of the Disasters Emergency Committee, Save the Children is currently working with other charities to deliver vital food and medical aid to millions of children caught up in the Middle East conflict.

“It also needs money urgently to sustain its relief work in other parts of the world, including East Africa, where more than two million children are facing acute malnutrition because of crop failures caused by climate change.

“As the birthplace of Save the Children’s co-founders, Eglantyne Jebb and her sister, Dorothy, the Ellesmere community has always given generously to the charity.

“I hope people will come along to our quiz night and help raise money while enjoying a good social get-together. It will be a lot of fun.

Admission is £20 for a team of four – pay at the door.

Mrs Ferries added that the group is proud of being based in the town where Save the Children was founded, following the visit by Her Royal Highness Princess Anne earlier in the year.

But she admitted that younger blood is needed to carry on their work if their standards are to be maintained.

She said: “Earlier this year, we were fortunate to be part of a visit to Ellesmere by Princess Anne, in her role as Patron of Save the Children.

“She was very impressed by the branch’s fund-raising efforts over more than half a century.

“We want to keep up the good work, but we really need more help from younger people.”
