FUNDRAISING for the Poppy Appeal in Ellesmere has been boosted by a dozen new volunteers supporting this year’s campaign

And with the countdown underway to Remembrance Sunday on November 10, the local branch of the Royal British Legion is hoping to beat last year’s record total of nearly £13,000.

Appeal organiser Caroline Ford explained that collection boxes have been distributed to nearly 50 shops, pubs and other businesses throughout the town and surrounding area, with staff and pupils at six schools involved.

“It’s a terrific community effort,” she said

“The people of Ellesmere and district are always incredibly generous and willing to give their support.

“We now have more than two dozen volunteers helping out – double last year – so we’re trying to do as well, if not better than in previous years.

“One of our members, Ben McEvoy, has put up large display poppies on lamp-posts around the town, and we’re grateful to Sue Francis, Ismay Evans and Patricia Miles for making and selling beautiful hand-crafted poppy brooches.”

Most volunteers will be working in shifts, taking donations for traditional poppies and other merchandise at the Legion’s stall in Tesco’s Ellesmere store. Others will join local Army Cadets in street collections.

More fundraising will be taking place at the monthly Coffee Club gathering at Criftins village hall from 10am until midday on Thursday, October 31.

The Legion branch is also hoping for a good turn-out when it stages its annual Poppy Concert at Ellesmere Comrades’ Club, on Saturday, November 9, the eve of Remembrance Sunday.

Starting at 7.30pm, the concert will feature the Porthywaen Silver Band and other local performers, plus an extensive raffle offering top-quality prizes donated by businesses and individuals. Admission £6 – pay at the door.

Branch chairman Bob McBride said: “It’s heartening to have more volunteers coming forward to help with fundraising this year, and we’re extremely grateful to everyone in the community who contributes to the Poppy Appeal.

“Last year, the Legion raised £50 million nationwide and the money goes a long way to providing health, welfare, financial and other support for those within our armed forces community who need help.
