FLOWERS fans in Oswestry have helped one club celebrate seven decades of enjoying the flora of the UK together.
Oswestry and Borders Flower Club celebrated its 70th anniversary last week with some members celebrating their own milestones of 60 years.
Kath Thomas, on behalf of the club, explained that Oswestry was one of the first in the country and why it was so special to members.

She said: “Oswestry & Borders Flower Club is one of the oldest National Association of Flower Arranging Societies (NAFAS) Flower Clubs in the country.

“The very first flower club was formed after the Second World War to get women out of their homes to share a love of flowers and floral design and to make new friends.
“And also to have the opportunity to learn a creative standard of floral design as set out by NAFAS through interesting demonstrators and workshops.
“Many members nowadays just come along to enjoy the demonstrations, finding it helps to de-stress after a busy day.
“Oswestry and Borders Flower Club have held Flower Festivals at St Oswald’s Church to help raise funds for the repair of the organ in 2011, as well as festivals at St Asaph and at St Mary’s in Ellesmere.

“Plus Shrewsbury Abbey and our members are always present with displays at Oswestry Show and Shrewsbury Flower Show.
“Our Christmas Demonstration is at Morda School with Mark Entwistle’s “Snow Storm”, on November 19 and promises to be spectacular show – visitors are welcome at £12.”
Kath added that Van Wildblood and Olive Morris have been members for more than 60 years, while principal Tricia Lea for 50 yrs and programme secretary Margaret Evans for more than 35 years.
