THE number of calls for firefighters overnight in north Shropshire because of flooding was in digital digits, the service has confirmed.

With heavy rains causing travel chaos and roads and rail in north Shropshire on Wednesday including services from Shrewsbury to Crewe and Wrexham suspended because of flooding, there were 12 calls.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said the 12 calls were between 6pm on Wednesday, October 16 to 10am on Thursday, October 17.

North Shropshire’s 12 calls were part of 51 overall that the service had to respond to and area manager Marc Millward said most were because of vehicles caught in flood water.

This led him to appeal to people to think twice before entering flood water and travelling in heavy rain.

He said: "We have received a lot of calls relating to flooding in the last 24 hours.

“Many of these involved vehicles stuck in flood water or residents concerned that flood water would affect their home and electrics.

“Do not drive through flood water as it is often deeper than it appears and takes less than you might think to flood your engine.

“If you do get stuck, only call the fire service if you are unable to exit your vehicle safely or in an emergency situation."
