A 91-year-old former rugby player was given a tour of his old club.

Don Whyte, who lives at HC-One's Bluebell View care home in Oswestry, Shropshire, played as a hooker for several clubs, including Waterloo, in the early 1950s, as well as representing the British Army in 1948 and 1949.

He retired from rugby in 1960, but still maintains his love for the sport.

This prompted Oswestry RFC's honorary secretary Liz Johnson to invite him to the club to watch a match as a guest of honour.

While there, Mr Whyte was given a special tour of the club by former club president and senior member Martin Ord.

He then watched a charity match with Mr Ord, while reminiscing about his own experiences on the pitch.

Mr Whyte was keen to pass on some advice to the young players, saying: "They've still got a long way to go."

She said: "We had a wonderful visit and Don absolutely loved it.

"He's been telling everyone he's the new coach.

"We want to pass on our thanks to everyone at Oswestry RFC, and especially Liz and Martin.

"They really did help make a wish come true for Don."

As well as his rugby career, he worked in the British Army Royal Tank Corps as a driving instructor for the Centurion tanks.
