A COMMUNITY group that maintains Chirk railway station is celebrating after being commended for the work it carries out at a special awards ceremony.

Friends of Chirk Station were given a ‘Highly Commended’ award at the National Rail Awards which took place on Thursday, September 12 at London’s prestigious Grosvenor House Hotel, celebrating achievements and excellence across every aspect of the railway.

The awards are to reward excellence and achievement across every aspect of the railway and a spokesman for the group shared their delight.

They added the award was dedicated to the memory of Christine Ashford, a community stalwart who recently passed away.

They said: “We’re thrilled to share that we received a ‘Highly Commended’ awards at the ceremony for the ‘Small Station of the Year’.

“The nomination for Chirk, follows their win in 2020 and is a result of hard work by our six station adoption volunteers, who look after the gardens and have arranged mural artworks by local artists.

“This award has been dedicated to founder Christine Ashford who was aware of this award but regrettably passed away recently.”

Melanie Lawton, community rail strategy lead at Transport for Wales, said: “It’s always great to see our stations and partnerships receive recognition, especially our station adopters at Chirk who give their time freely to help make the station a welcoming hub for the community and visitors.
