Oswestry is set to welcome a celebrated author to discuss the rise of Welsh music in the 1990s.
Neil Collins, author of International Velvet: How Wales Conquered the '90s Charts, will be speaking at an event hosted by Siop Cwlwm, the town’s unique Welsh bookshop.
The talk, which is free of charge but requires a ticket due to limited availability, will be held on Monday, October 21 at 7.30pm at the Wynnstay Hotel on Church Street.
The book explores how bands like Catatonia, the Manic Street Preachers, Stereophonics, Super Furry Animals, 60ft Dolls, and Gorki’s Zygotic Mynci burst onto the British music scene.
- Oswestry care home that closed after inadequate rating could become apartments
- Shropshire couple who rescued village pub set to move on from area
- Calls to fix 'most dangerous junction in the Midlands' put to Prime Minister
These groups not only broadened the UK's musical landscape but also showcased Wales' rich cultural heritage.
The book details the drastic changes in Wales' musical landscape in the 1990s, following a bleak period in the 1970s and 80s marked by the closure of steelworks and coal mines.
International Velvet features fresh analysis and new interviews, chronicling the decade in which 'Cool Cymru' won over the masses and inspired the vibrant Welsh music scene that continues to flourish today.
Following the talk, there will be an audience Q&A session and a book signing.
