HEATING oil that entered a storm drain during heavy rainfall over the weekend prompted emergency action from Shropshire firefighters.

One crew from Oswestry, joined by colleagues from Tweedale, with the environmental protection unit, was called to Vicarage Lane in Weston Rhyn on Sunday night.

A spokesman for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) confirmed that the operation also required a Hazmat suit officer and that Welsh Water was also present.

They said: “A quantity of heating oil entered a storm drain during heavy rain.

“The incident was left with Welsh Water.”

A stop message was sent by firefighters to SFRS control at around 11.10pm, nearly two hours after first called to the scene, to confirm no further support was required.

However, a spokesman for Welsh Water confirmed that after a thorough search, oil could not be found in the water. 

He said: "Welsh Water crews attended after reports that heating oil had leaked into drains following the theft of oil from a residential property.

“Our sewers and pumping stations in the area have been checked. However, there was no sign of heating oil beyond the Local Authority’s highway drainage system.”
