A PASSAGEWAY down the side of Oswestry’s Sports Direct store ‘has to be cleaned up and given better lighting’, according to a town councillor.

Conservative councillor Les Maguire has put forward a motion to Wednesday’s full council meeting to ask the owners of walls that form the passageway to what used to be the entrance to the Old Factory Shop.

Cllr Maguire says the work in Cross Street should be paid for by the town council to ensure that the passageway remains in keeping with the rest of Oswestry.

His motion said: “The passageway is frequently used by residents and visitors, and its current condition does not reflect the high standards the town council wishes to maintain in public areas.

“Cleaning, painting, and improved lighting will enhance the visual appeal of the area, promote safety, and contribute to a more welcoming town centre.

“Seeking the consent of the adjoining property owners ensures proper collaboration and respects their ownership rights while facilitating improvements for the benefit of the wider community.

“The town council authorises the town clerk to seek consent from the property owners and, upon approval, proceed with the necessary arrangements to clean, paint, and install additional lighting at the passageway, with the costs to be covered by the town council.”

Meanwhile, Cllr Jay Moore issued a motion for an end to monthly council meetings and called for a return to committee meetings.

He said that with council meetings going past 9pm, he wanted to gauge other councillor views as well as officers on whether they should revert back.

His motion stated: “After once again having business go way past the proposed end time of the meeting, I think it is time for the council to reconsider the current situation and reintroduce committees and have more meetings.

“The current situation simply doesn't work, and I believe other Councillors feel the same. I'd suggest we have trialled the new system for long enough.

“Having agendas so large they need to be split into five emails in order to send them, is proof enough for me.

“I'd be keen to hear from officers as to their preferences and how effective you find this method compared to the previous one.”

The meeting will start at 7pm on Wednesday at the Guildhall.
