GARDENERS of the future was the focus for the 2024 St Martins Flower and Vegetable show last week.

The annual event, held at the St Martins Miners Institute on Saturday, August 17, placed more emphasis on children’s classes with a great turnout for all.

Paul Gurnett, chairman of the St Martins Flower and Vegetable Show, said they were delighted with how the event went.

He said: “The emphasis this year was on the children’s classes.

“To this end, the committee approached local businesses, and they kindly donated seeds, compost and wood for us to construct raised beds for St Martins School.

“Seeds and compost were also donated to St Martins “Rainbows”.

“Judging for the show started at 11 am and finished at 1pm and the show opened to the public at 2pm.

“Outside, there was a Raptor stand provided by Harry Hamilton from close encounters who brought along some of his Owls to display for the public.

“This proved to be a great success, especially for the children as well as the adults. Harry was accompanied by his granddaughter who helped with the educational content of the display.

“Also, there was an educational stand provided by Claire Mulvey from Shropshire Ornithological Society (SOS). This provided a “hands on” display of coloring for the children and wildlife activities.

“The show included classes in Vegetables, Fruit and Flowers, Photography, Cookery and Craft.

“There were children’s classes in two age groups – up to seven years of age and eight to 13 years of age in Vegetables, flowers, craft and cookery.”

Winners in the up to seven section were Arthur Wyn Davies for fruit and vegetables and also flowers and plants, while Corey Clarke won cookery and Bobby Willis won crafts – Ava Perry came second in all.
