More than 30 members of the Borderland Rotary Club discovered the meaning of the term 'Shropshire Gap' during an evening walk along Montgomery canal.
On their fact-finding walk, the group, which included partners and guests, were eager to learn about the term.
Their walk began from the restored section of the canal at Crickheath basin, which reopened in June 2023, went past another stretch currently under restoration and extended to Schoolhouse Bridge, built from scratch through public donations and formally opened in June 2024.

Club member Chris Bryan-Smith shed light on the subject saying: "The Shropshire Gap is the colloquial name given to the unrestored section of the Montgomery Canal between Crickheath Basin which we visited earlier and Llanymynech on the Welsh border.
"Strangely enough, we hope that one day, it will not exist, and boats will be able to travel from the national canal network over the border and take advantage of the two proposed new bridges, just south of here."
Reacting to this, Borderland president, Rob Hughes said: "It certainly is a wonderful section of the canal, a hidden gem, and well worth all the effort to bring it back to life, I’m sure we will all spread the word."
