A Shropshire company has won a Great Taste Award for producing a honey that includes one of the world’s hottest chillies.

The Ellesmere Honey Company run by Julie Dean with husband David, picked up a Great Taste Award for two of their creations.

The most notable of these is the ‘Ellesmere Honey Company's Pure Wildflower Honey Infused with Carolina Reaper Chilli Peppers’.

Carolina Reaper chilis are some of the hottest on earth and are roughly 400 times as spicy as a jalapeno you would get on a pizza - needing to be handled with gloves.

The honey apparently “sends your taste buds on an unforgettable adventure”.

The honey picked up a prestigious two stars from judges along with the company’s pure heather honey.

Ellesmere Honey Company said: “We are thrilled that both our heather and Carolina Reaper honeys have been awarded two stars each.

“The stars keep coming therefore: We are now a ‘Great Taste producer’.”

They were not the only winners in the area – Niche Patisserie at Black Gate in Oswestry picked up a star for their hazelnut fudge.

The bakery and restaurant is run by television baking competition Bake Off: The Professionals semi-finalist, Adam Cleal with his mother Samantha.

In a video online the pair said: “We are immensely proud and so excited to say that we have won a Great Taste Award nationally.

“It’s national recognition for all our hard work and we are just so, so happy to have achieved this.

"It’s for our own hazelnut fudge which is made with Verona chocolate and roasted hazelnuts.

"We absolutely love it and we hope you enjoy it and we are as proud as punch to get this recognition.”
