SHROPSHIRE firefighters were called to secondary school between Oswestry and Shrewsbury on Wednesday night – only for it to be a false alarm.

One Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) crew from Baschurch was sent to Corbert School, in Eyton Lane at around 7.20pm after reports of a fire.

However, when they arrived, they could not find the fire and it was soon concluded that a faulty smoke detector was to blame.

A spokesman said: “This incident was a false alarm possibly due to build up of dust and insects in smoke detector head.

“System has now been reset with no further activation and full inspection of property carried out using a thermal imaging camera.”

A stop message was sent to SFRS control around 40 minutes later that no further support was required from other stations.
