The Welsh Secretary has said it is too early to tell what the future holds for the long-awaited Pant-Llanymynech bypass.

The new Welsh Secretary Jo Stevens, who was speaking at this year’s Royal Welsh Show, said it was “too early to say” about whether cross border projects such as the Pant bypass will go ahead or will be reviewed.

However she did add that the financial situation of the country is worse than previously thought.

“It’s too early for me to say at this stage,” said Ms Stevens. “We have been in government two weeks.

“The Chancellor is looking at public finances. We are looking at all the figures, we are essentially opening the lid of the box and seeing what is inside and we are pretty angry about what we have seen so far.”

Ms Stevens added that while it was too early to say whether such projects would be safe she did add that in principle she is in favour of Wales and England working closely to get better results for those working across the border

“I am a great believer, that although we do have a border between England and Wales, people in Wales travel and work do their business use services across the border and vice versa,” added Ms Stevens.

“We are part of the United Kingdom and we have to make sure that each constituent nation of the United Kingdom works cohesively for the benefit of everybody so I don’t take a rigid approach to these things you learn from best practice in other parts of the UK.”
