A DRIVER had to be replaced after passing through a stop sign without permission, as per protocol according to Transport for Wales (TfW).

Passengers were held at Chirk because of the ‘operational incident’ from around 2pm on the 9.22am Cardiff to Holyhead service, which was forced to terminate at Chester.

According to a TfW spokesman, the driver had passed a stop signal near Gobowen without authorisation, meaning the procedure is that the driver is taken off duty and replaced with another driver.

The service was held at Chirk where the drivers were changed.

They added: "We investigate all operational incidents to determine root causes and prevent future incidents."

Services along the route, which also takes in Wrexham, are now running to Chester where they will terminate.

Earlier, services were delayed or cancelled along the line over what Transport for Wales described as an "incident".

A spokesman for the rail operator said: “If one of our trains is delayed or cancelled and you arrive at your destination station more than 15 minutes later than scheduled, you can claim compensation through 'Delay Repay'.”
