A road near Oswestry is closed after a fallen tree snapped power cables.

According to information on Shropshire Council the road in Selattyn is expected to be closed until around midnight after a tree fell blocking the way through.

The road will be closed for at least another 10 hours while teams from Openreach repair the overhead cables which have been taken down by the trees after turbulent weather overnight.

Pictures from a local resident shows the tree that fell covering the entire road. This has also snapped the telegraph pole in two leaving it on the ground.

According to Shropshire Council the primary school has been informed of the situation and they are warning that the site is "hazardous".

The council were trying to contact the owner of the land where the tree was so it can be cleared away.

According to a notice on Shropshire Council’s website “Crown House Junction Lawnt To Pentre Dafydd Crossroads” will be closed until 11.59pm.

Whilst the road is closed the council have confirmed that a diversion will be in place “from Gyrn Road to B4579, Selattyn”.

A spokesperson for Shropshire Council said: "A privately owned tree has come down on Glyn Road near Selattyn Primary School, completely blocking the road.  The tree has brought down a telegraph pole and cables.

"The site is very hazardous, so a road closure and diversion has been set-up.  The school are aware of the situation.

"An Openreach engineer is due to meet the highway technician on site in order to determine the next steps."
