A WEIGHT restriction stopping trucks weighing more than 7.5 tonnes has been applied to a bridge near where two rivers meet in Shropshire because of ‘structural integrity’.

Crew Green Bridge takes traffic over the River Severn at Crew Green – a hot spot for severe flooding in recent years – and now Shropshire Council has applied the restriction to stop HGVs from travelling.

The decision is based on recent emergency inspections of the bridge.

“Following a detailed inspection of Crew Green Bridge, an emergency 7.5t weight restriction has been introduced to safeguard members of the travelling public," Shropshire Council said.

“The steel bridge  –  which carries an unclassified road over the River Severn – is showing signs of significant corrosion which is affecting its structural integrity.

“The weight limit will remain in place for the foreseeable future, and until Shropshire Council is able to determine how uninterrupted access can be restored.

“The council is planning to undertake some temporary repairs to sustain the 7.5t restriction, but the bridge is coming to the end of its serviceable life.

“A diversion route is being put in place for HGVs.”
