Empty retail premises in Oswestry could have a new lease of life thanks to town council funding.

Businesses and start-ups in the area can apply for funding up to £5,000 and it is available from Oswestry Town Council.

The funds are allocated to refurbish premises vacant for more than six months in the town centre.

The "Breathing New Life into Empty Properties" scheme is designed to tackle the national problem of vacant shops, which indicate the health of a high street.

Grant money can be used for premises refurbishing, decoration, signage, and accessibility improvements.

Despite having fewer empty premises than most towns, the council is keen to see more re-let shops in Oswestry.

The Mayor of Oswestry Councillor Mike Isherwood said: "We are blessed with a vibrant town centre with award winning markets, an eclectic mix of shops as well as great pubs and cafes.

"This is a great opportunity to help businesses set up in the heart of our lovely town too.

"The grants will be a boost for them and our high streets.

"Everyone is a winner."

Potential applicants must act quickly due to limited funding, which needs to be spent by March 31, 2025.
