CONSULTATION over a 14th-century pub’s bid to build new tourist accommodation near Oswestry will remain open until the end of the month.

Owners of the Cross Keys Inn, in Kinnerley, put forward a planning proposal to Shropshire Council last month to convert existing rood space in the pub to build two self-contained accommodation units within the Grade II-listed building.

Consultation on the plans ends on Tuesday, June 25 and a design and access statement, published on Shropshire Council’s planning portal has set out how bosses intend to build the rooms using as much of the original space and materials as they can.

It said: “The original, timber-framed building, including three cruck trusses, appears to date from the 14th century or 15th century.

“This probably had an open hall and a cross passage.

“Later alterations included the insertion of a first floor and a large chimney stack in the 15th or 16th century.

“The roof to this part was raised in the 18th or 19th century with the retention of the original purlins.

“A cruck-framed building, either built for domestic or communal use placed at the centre of the village.”

It added: “It is proposed to utilise as much of the existing materials as possible.

“The moving of the door in the eastern gable wall will be a wooden door that will match the removed one and the brickwork will be re-used where it has been taken from in making the new opening.

“All mortar will be of the same mix as the existing ensuring all colours match. The arched lintel will be replicated. The window that is being replaced will be timber and match the existing removed one.

“The timber shutter will be remade and re hung. The roof lights will be heritage conservation flush fitting type.

“All the roof slates will be removed and replaced and any new ones will be sourced to match the existing in size.

“The existing car parking facilities are of adequate size to accommodate the additional vehicles and the new entrance door will allow for the safe passage to and from the units.”

The statement that local users of the pub and area have agreed that a space to host tourists is needed given the village’s location.
