A resident near Oswestry claims her local road is “the worst in Shropshire” - and that it has been closed off by the council.

Elinor Hughes who lives near Selattyn has said the lane near her home has been so devastated by potholes that Shropshire Council has ended up closing the road.

“I honestly think it is probably the worst road in the county – we have some bad roads around here but this is pretty horrific,” said Elinor.

“I went over it the other day and heard a clonk on my car, I’m sure there must have been damage to other cars because I have a four-wheel drive and have quite a bit of ground clearance.”

The condition of the road has deteriorated severely over the last winter with both sides of it beginning to collapse.

“It’s been like that all winter. It has slowly got even worse,” added Elinor. “When it was wet, at the worst it was like the road was just sinking below.

“A few years ago they resurfaced it but I don’t think they dug down an hardcored it, they just put a bit of tarmac on top so of course it just collapsed again.

“Initially everyone was driving around the one pothole but now it has collapsed on the other side there’s just this big crater so it’s almost impassable.”

OTHER NEWS:

Multiple local residents have reported it to the council which led to them closing the road but there have been no signs of it being repaired.

“It’s been reported and their attitude is of ‘we’ll put road closed signs up so you can’t sue us’,” added Elinor.

“I suppose they say well you shouldn’t be using it but it’s the road we use to get to work everyday.

“I tried to report it on their website, they say this road is not maintained by us – but it's their road closed signs so it must be their road.

“At the top of the road it goes into Wrexham so its one of those forgotten roads so Wrexham don’t do their bit and Shropshire don’t do their bit.”

The condition of the road has now led local residents to take matters into their own hands

“A week or so ago my friend saw an old couple there with bags of rocks to try and make it passable,” said Elinor “Because people come and walk dogs in the area, they were putting rock in themselves but it hasn’t done a huge amount.

“Up the road is a riding school and bunkhouse accommodation and it is affecting their business they’re having people not turn up because they this the road is closed.”

“We don’t expect it to be beautiful tarmac it would just be nice if it was usable wouldn’t it?”
