Derwen College welcomed visitors to its Gobowen campus as they took part in its annual fete and dog show.

The event included a range of family-friendly activities and managed to raise significant funds that will directly contribute to the welfare of the learners and residents.

Visitors enjoyed picnics in a strawberry-themed garden, selected bedding plants at the garden centre, and savoured scones and cream within The Orangery Restaurant.

Funds collected will go towards providing extra-curricular experiences and opportunities for Derwen's students with special educational needs and disabilities.

The children’s play area was popular, with children enjoying the Mega Bloks building station and bubble blowing tubs.

There was an inflatable slide and bouncy castle as well as independent craft stalls which lined the bowling green

The duck race provided three minutes of "pure frenzy", before the frontrunners came across the finish line.

Only a beak’s length separated second and first as duck 14, a veteran of 2023, mounted the podium.

The performing arts department’s face-painting stall attracted all ages while the HR team supplied fresh Derwen-made ice cream.

Despite some rain, Sunday's dog show still witnessed a strong turnout with more than 60 teams displaying their dog's skills.

Judge Debby Knight had the task of choosing the winners to go head-to-head in the final showdown - best in show.

Dog Albie and his owner James, fresh from success in the ‘most appealing eyes’ class, were crowned overall champions.

Stallholders contributed to the event, with Park Hall's doggy day care business, Tails and Trails, and Emerald Pawtraits, a professional pet photography service from Mold, among the line-up of traders.

Duffy’s Diner, Oswestry, sponsored the dog show and provided a selection of competition prizes, while Farm & Pet Place, Chirk, donated the ‘best in show’ prize.

Winning dog, Albie, took home a new bed among an array of other prizes.

Derwen College events organiser and community fundraiser, Megan Charman, said: "Watching the months of hard work pay off over the course of this weekend has been an absolute pleasure.

"There was a great atmosphere and it was lovely to see families take advantage of the space and facilities we have here."

She added: "We would like to say a huge thank you to everybody who made the journey to join us over the weekend; your support has been incredible.

"The funds raised at the event will make an amazing difference towards the experiences we are able to provide for our students and residents."

Derwen College said it is "grateful to every single one of our donors for their support".
