Bomb disposal teams were called after a live shell was found on a footpath near Oswestry.

West Mercia Police were called to Rhydycroesau on Tuesday afternoon (May 29) after a member of the public stumbled across an unexploded device.

The device, which appeared to be an unexploded shell, was found on a footpath in the nearby woods.

Police were called to the area and then secured the scene, putting in place a cordon around the explosive.

Specialist teams from Explosives Ordnance Disposal were then called to the scene and confirmed that the device was a live shell.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: “Police were called to a footpath in Rhydycroesau, Shropshire at around 1.15pm yesterday (Tuesday 28 May) following a report from a member of the public that they had discovered a potential explosive device.

“Officers attended and put a cordon in place. Explosives Ordnance Disposal (EOD) also attended and carried out a control explosion."

Members of Oswestry Safer Neighbourhood Teams were also in attendance and confirmed that there had been “no danger to the wider public”.

A spokesperson for Oswestry Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “Officers were called to attend a suspicions device that had been located in the woods near Rhydycroesau that had been reported by a member of public.

“EOD were asked to attend and the device was a live ordinance and was rendered safe at scene. There was no danger to the wider public.

“If such devices are found please do not handle them, call the police on either 101 or 999 and we will attend and assess the situation and seek specialist support from our colleagues from EOD.”
