MUSIC fans can enjoy a ‘Super Saturday’ of their own next month in an action-packed programme at Whittington Music Festival.

The festival will have its own Super Saturday on May 18 with masterclasses in the morning and concerts in both the afternoon and evening, all taking place in St John the Baptist Church in Whittington.

A spokesman for the event said that Saturday will be a jam-packed way to enjoy the best of the festival.

They added: “The masterclasses are an incredible opportunity for talented young musicians to work with some of the professional musicians who are performing at the festival.

“Oswestry School sixth form pupil and St. Oswald’s Church chorister Alice Williams will be singing in the afternoon Family Concert, along with Adcote School’s Alicia Martin who swept the board in the younger sections of the Vocal classes at Oswestry Youth Music Festival last month.

“North Wales is well represented by violinist Nia Lincoln, also of Oswestry School, Oliver Pearce (cello) and Brandon Edwards (piano) who will all be performing individually and as an ensemble in the Family concert.

“A new feature for the Saturday afternoon concert this year is Jazz in the Afternoon.

"This section of the concert is entitled “Colour of Sound” and features two internationally acclaimed jazz musicians – pianist Zoe Rahman and flautist Rowan Sutherland.

“This double-bill Family and Jazz concert starts at 3pm and costs £15 for adults, and is free for under 26s.”

Meanwhile, also on Saturday, Composer in Residence Jeremy Sams has written a new song cycle “People and Paintings” for string quartet, piano, flute and soprano and will be getting a world premiere.

He added that ‘this is a piece about Venice where I’m lucky enough to teach every year’ and will invoke memories of gondolas.

Bringing the local young talent story full-circle, Whittington-born soprano Kizzy Lumley-Edwards is returning to the festival as a professional musician for the third year to perform the song cycle.
