THE Ellesmere Yarn Bombers are one of many groups in Shropshire to be recognised by the outgoing High Sheriff – much to their delight.

Mandy Thorn MBE will finish her year as the High Sheriff this month and volunteers from across Shropshire have received community awards to mark their outstanding service to the county.

This includes the anonymous collective that decorates the town with knitted items, across places such as the top of post boxes.

A spokesman for the group admitted they were delighted to be recognised by Mrs Thorn for the colour they bring to the town.

“We’re very grateful and proud to receive a High Sherriff’s award,” they said.

“We enjoy surprising Ellesmere and yarn bombing the town for various events throughout the year. Harry Potter, Spring, Easter, Summer Seaside, Jubilee and Christmas to name but a few.

“What’s next? You’ll have to wait and see!

“We’re a social and supportive group. Some of us attend the knit and natters at Red Lion, in Church Street, every other Tuesday morning and Moolahs, in Scotland Street, on Monday evenings once a month.

“Others contribute from a distance through Ismays, in the High Street, or our private Facebook group.

“We’re fundraising for more top secret exciting projects.

“I wear my Sherrif’s award to every meeting.”

Mrs Thorn said she was rewarding Ellesmere Yarn Bombers for ‘decorating the town of Ellesmere with the most wonderful post box toppers and wrapping lampposts and trees with colourful yarns’.

She add that she was delighted to make the awards to recognise the remarkable work volunteers play in every part of the county.

“I said at the start of my year I wanted to shine a light on some of the county’s unsung heroes, and each and every week I have met the most inspirational people,” said Mrs Thorn.
