TWO of north Shropshire’s recycling centres are under threat amid budget cuts at Shropshire Council.
Shropshire Council is looking to make savings in order to achieve a budget that could help the authority save millions of pounds as it fights a £62 million deficit. The budget, which also includes a council tax rise of 4.99 per cent, was passed by councillors last week.
The budget proposals suggest that closing two of the five centres across the county – which include Shrewsbury, Cravens Arms, Bridgnorth as well as Oswestry and Whitchurch – would save the council £14,000 a year.

Oswestry’s site, on the Mile Oak Industrial Estate, runs from 9am to 5pm, each day could see its future affected by its proximity to both Shrewsbury and Wrexham.
Whitchurch’s centre, which is based on the Waymills Industrial Estate, could face the threat of closure given it is one of end of the A49 to Shrewsbury’s centre which is on the same road in Battlefield.
It also operates from 9am until 5pm on each day.
Shrewsbury is also up for closure; however, the unit at Battlefield serves much of the area as well as the county town and is likely to be saved.
Craven Arms and Bridgnorth both serve the south of Shropshire and are also on the chopping block under the proposals.
The council has also resurrected plans to start charging for green waste bins in a move which could earn it £4 million.

Finance portfolio holder, Councillor Gwilym Butler, said some of the decisions to be taken by Shropshire Council have made it a ‘unpalatable but deliverable’ budget.
He said: “Management of local government has never been more challenging than it is at present.”
