The New Saints continued their remarkable season by equalling their own Guinness World record run of consecutive victories with a comfortable 3-0 derby win at home to Newtown on Tuesday night.

The Oswestry club's 27th consecutive win means they now sit a staggering 17 points clear at the top of the JD Cymru Premier and with one hand on the championship silverware with half the season still remaining.

The Saints also remain on course for a remarkable clean sweep of honours.

The win means the Saints have equalled their record set in 2017 and will be looking to break it against Bala Town at Maes Tegid on Friday.

The Saints have now surpassed the record of 26 wins on the bounce set by German club Dresdner in 1943 and Dutch giants Ajax in 1972 and have not lost a game since a 3-2 defeat against Luxembourg's Swift Hesperange in the UEFA Conference League on August 1st, 2023.

Should they win on Saturday, the Saints' next target will be the 62 match unbeaten run set by Scottish club Celtic from 1915 to 1917.

Head coach Craig Harrison said: "it's a fantastic achievement.

"I remember last time I probably did not give it as much credence as what it should last time. It's a credit to the players and staff, there's a lot of hard work there."

The Saints started the match brightly and it took them just eight minutes to break the deadlock.

A clever pass from Danny Redmond reached Ben Clark on the edge of the six yard box who slotted beyond ex-TNS goalkeeper Andy Wycherley from close range.

Declan McManus had three further chances to extend his side’s lead inside the opening 20 minutes before Clark was fouled in the area by the returning Fumpa Mwandwe and McManus netted the resulting penalty.

Chances were sparse for Newtown but top scorer Aaron Williams kept home stopper Connor Roberts on his toes to tip away his effort from the top corner just before the break.

Wycherley was called upon to deny Ryan Brobbel who raced onto Josh Pask's throughball at the start of the second-half and was in action again on the hour to deny Dan Williams.

It was all over two minutes later with Jordan Marshall freeing McManus to round Wycherley and slot into an empty net.

Tom Jones and Brad Young both came off the bench and tried their luck but the job was already done as the home side celebrated another victory and their 27th in succession.
