THE work of a group installed to restore Oswestry’s heritage will be the subject of the latest talk of a history society.

Oswestry & Border History & Archaeology Group (OBHAG) is holding its latest meeting at the Methodist Church Hall in Castle Street on Friday, February 9 at 7.30pm.

A spokesman for OBHAG said the talk will be on Oswestry’s High Street Heritage Action Zone (HAZ) which works to make ‘lasting’ repair works to the town’s history.

They added: “On Friday, OBHAG’s monthly talk will be “Celebrating our history and heritage – Oswestry’s High Street Heritage Action Zone”.

“In 2020, Oswestry was awarded Heritage Action Zone status, and funding, with the project developed and implemented by Shropshire Council, Oswestry Town Council and the Oswestry Business Improvement District and overseen by Historic England.

“The HAZ initiative, focusing on around 60 towns, seeks to secure lasting improvements to historic high streets and the communities who use them through heritage led regeneration, making town centres such as ours attractive, engaging and vibrant places for people to live, work and spend time.

“Samantha Jones, the project officer for Oswestry’s High Street Heritage Action Zone programme, will talk about work undertaken to restore historic shop fronts, improve town centre alley ways including the Willow Street entrance to the park, and celebrate the town and its heritage through events.

“Samantha will also provide an update on Llwyd Mansion, recently purchased by Oswestry Town Council with support from the HAZ programme

“The meeting will take place at the Methodist Church Hall, Castle Street, Oswestry, starting at 7.30pm.”
