THERE was a chance to take a trip back to yesteryear for Ellesmere residents last weekend with a special historical event in the town.
More than 60 people enjoyed reminiscing about the last 100 years of Ellesmere history on Saturday, September 23 with a talk and slideshow about Market Street at Our Space, in Trimpley Street.
Ellesmere Library manager Sheila Williams said the event was the result of more than a decade of work by researchers Geraldine Potter, Carole Youngs and Ruth Sandall.

She said: “Over the last 10 years, our volunteer team led by Carole has researched the history of each street leading off the central town square.
“The team cover the years 1900 to the present day as it’s a timespan people can best relate to.
“Plotting the timeline of each house is the aim so the old Kelly’s business directories and Ellesmere tourist booklets are invaluable reference guides.
“So too are the present occupants, especially if they have researched the history themselves or have old photographs.
“The Ellesmere Memories Facebook page also became a great way of sourcing knowledge.
"We posted a different property each week and asked for comments.
“An old camera… purchased from E. Caseley’s, number one Market St in the 1930s was also exhibited, owned by Geoff Edwards.
“Our extensive photo collection was on display the rest of the day in the library.”
The three researchers were praised for their efforts in putting together something for everyone to enjoy.
