OSWESTRY’S Green Party says it will call for a by-election to fill the spot left by the resignation of a Conversative town councillor last week.

Jess Michie resigned her spot on Oswestry Town Council in the Cambrian ward on Tuesday, August 22, with a notice of casual vacancy announced on August 30.

Councillor Duncan Kerr, for both Oswestry and Shropshire Councils, is the Green Party co-ordinator in north Shropshire and confirmed that former town colleague Nikki Hughes will be their choice to contest the seat.

He said: “The Green Party has moved quickly to call an election following the resignation of Conservative town councillor Jess Michie midway through their term.

OTHER NEWS:

“There is now an empty chair in the council chamber and Cambrian residents have told us they want a hard-working councillor to represent them.

“Therefore we have gathered the signatures needed to formally call for an election and are delighted to  announce that the popular and experienced ex-councillor Nikki Hughes, who represented the ward from 2017 to 2021, will be our candidate.

Border Counties Advertizer:

“With support from the community and from her Green colleagues, Cllr Rosie Radford and Cllr Stephen Froggatt, we will have a strong and dynamic team to tackle all the issues in the Cambrian ward.”

The deadline request for an election in the ward is Tuesday, September 19 with a minimum of 10 signatures required to officially request it.

If that number is not reached – though the Green Party says it has the numbers – then a person can be co-opted onto the council by current councillors.
