AN ELLESMERE public space is offering the chance for over-60s to catch a classic movie.

Saturday Cinema is the latest innovation at Ellesmere’s Our Space community hub – and it is all free.

Assistant manager Mike Grierson is hoping to attract film fans by screening a classic movie every month.

“The idea is to provide an inclusive cinema experience for people affected by dementia as well as other cinema fans” he explained.

“There’s no charge and we’ll also be providing free refreshments.”

This Saturday, August 5, Mike has arranged a morning matinee between 10am and 12noon to show the 1959 crime-comedy ‘Some Like it Hot’, starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemon.

“It’s a Hollywood landmark movie,” said Mike.

“The film was lauded by the critics, and nominated for six Oscars.

“But incredibly it was banned throughout the state of Kansa because a kissing scene featuring Marilyn was considered to be ‘too disturbing,’ though it’s very tame by today’s standards.”
