OSWESTRY has embraced its 'Summer of Art' with the much-anticipated opening of the second largest textile art exhibition outside London.

Town mayor, Cllr Olly Rose, attended the launch of the 'Stitch by Stitch' exhibition at The Willow Gallery and enthusiastically encouraged everyone to attend.

She said: “It's fantastic, do go along.

“The exhibition is organised by two local textile artists Alison Holt and Suzette Smart and is the second largest textile art exhibition outside London.

“It's running for eight weeks and there are also demos and workshops.”

As a town with a deep-rooted creative spirit, Oswestry has drawn inspiration from the national theme for the 2023 Heritage Open Days: Creativity Unwrapped.

Guided by the Oswestry Cultural Consortium, which organises the annual Love Oswestry festival, the 'Summer of Art' initiative seeks to infuse Oswestry with artistic endeavours throughout the entire summer, culminating in a grand finale coinciding with Heritage Open Days from September 8 to 16.

At the heart of the 'Summer of Art' lies ART-efact, a project led by local artist Holly Maries. ART-efact harnesses the intriguing collections housed at Oswestry Town Archives and Oswestry Town Museum to inspire participating artists.

Collaborating with cultural partners and significant locations in Oswestry, four talented local artists will weave the town's stories into their art.

The project will culminate in a two-week exhibition during Heritage Open Days, England's largest festival of arts and culture.

Additionally, Qube in Oswestry has launched its summer exhibition, 'New Beginnings', offering further artistic exploration.

A notable addition to the summer program is the drama initiative 'Sense of Place', running from August 7 to 10 at Hope Church, with a final performance at Hermon Arts on August 11.

Under the guidance of Royal Shakespeare Company associate, Michael Corbidge, this engaging workshop offers young people aged 12-14 an immersive experience in creative writing, performance, and improvisation.

Throughout the summer, Cae Glas Park will host theatre and musical performances, culminating in the eagerly anticipated 'Culture Fest' on September 9.

Oswestry's guided tours, held every Saturday at 11am from the Tourist Information Centre, provide an immersive historical experience.

Additionally, history and poetry walks are planned for September, further enhancing the artistic and cultural offerings for both residents and visitors.
