THERE'S exciting news for art lovers and aspiring creatives in Oswestry, as the town is now home to a new vibrant and welcoming studio that provides a space for individuals to unleash their creativity.

Located on the ground floor of the Cambrian Buildings on Coney Green, The Claypit is specifically designed as a haven for clay enthusiasts of all skill levels.

Rachel Swift, founder and lead tutor at The Claypit, is a local ceramic artist, and has been working with clay and ceramics for over 30 years.

She said: “For a long time I worked at the British Museum specialising in conserving and restoring ancient and modern ceramics from all over the world.

“I also exhibited my own ceramic work across the UK, have worked behind the scenes on incredible exhibitions and spent many summers on archaeological excavations.”

With a wide range of offerings, The Claypit caters to everyone interested in clay artistry.

Whether you're a complete beginner or already possess some clay skills, they have you covered.

Adult tasters, classes, and courses are available, each tailored to suit individual abilities and interests.

Excitingly, The Claypit will soon introduce a membership scheme, providing independent clay artists with a unique opportunity to access the studio's facilities.

The studio warmly welcomes groups, including families and friends, to arrange unforgettable Claypit experiences.

Classes at The Claypit are kept intimate, with a maximum of eight participants.

Rachel added: “At the Claypit people share the joy, successes and mishaps of making with clay in a welcoming, supportive environment.

“Working with clay has so many benefits, it can encourage mindfulness, quiet and calm.

“There are no boundaries in terms of who can work with clay. Clay is for everyone.”

From functional mugs and bowls to whimsical sculptures and exquisite works of art, the possibilities are endless.

Whether using a potter's wheel or employing hand-building techniques that have been honed for centuries, participants' creations are fired in the on-site studio kiln, reaching temperatures exceeding 1,000°C.

This transformation turns clay into durable ceramic, built to stand the test of time.

In line with their commitment to environmental consciousness, The Claypit encourages individuals to only keep and fire the pieces they truly cherish. Once fired, clay remains in existence for over 20,000 years, making conscious consumption an essential practice.

Notably, clay in its unfired state is entirely recyclable, allowing unused creations to be reshaped and repurposed by others.
