SHROPSHIRE Council says a date for work to begin on constructing the £5 million bridge across the A5 as part of the Mile End re-development is yet to be confirmed.

Commuters passing through Oswestry have spotted the materials to build the new bridge, which has been criticised over its design in some quarters, including by members of the town council, have been placed by the side of the road.

However, Shropshire Council has confirmed that despite the arrival of the materials on the site, a date for the construction will be announced at a later time.

Councillor Dean Carroll, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for growth, regeneration and housing said: “A number of components have been already been delivered, and have been fabricated and painted, such as the bridge and landings.

“Other parts are expected to be delivered within the next month.

“The council is currently finalising contractual arrangements, and will share an update with details on the programme of works when we are able to do so.”

Oswestry and Shropshire councillor Duncan Kerr had previously warned in 2022 that the current design would have an impact on attracting tourism and businesses to the new Business and Innovation Park.

He was joined in that call by Green Party colleague Cllr Mike Isherwood; however, Cllr Ed Potter, from Shropshire Council, confirmed the design was fixed and will be completed.
