UKRAINIANS based at a hub created to help them integrate into Oswestry life brought a piece of home with them this week.

The families who use the Guildhall, on the Bailey Head, to help improve their English language skills, as well as meeting up to provide support for one another, celebrated Vyshyvanka Day last week.

Vyshyvanka Day is an international holiday that aims to preserve the Ukrainian folk traditions of creating and wearing ethnic embroidered clothes called vyshyvankas.

Councillor Olly Rose, Mayor of Oswestry, who is also involved in the hub, said the day was a reminder of home for the refugees as they worse their national dress.

She said: “Many of our Ukrainian visitors wore their traditional embroidered tops to the hub today to celebrate Vyshyvanka Day

“(It was with) one of the English groups held at the hub taught by one of our volunteers Vincent Looijer du-puis.

“We now run English classes both on Tuesdays and Thursdays and have some Ukrainians travelling from as far as the Welshpool area to improve their English as quickly as possible.

“All of our members are keen to develop English language both for work and to integrate into the community.

"We have a friendly bunch of volunteers running the hub and would really welcome a couple more on a very flexible basis.”
