A NORTH Shropshire town has released further details of how it will be celebrating King Charles' coronation this weekend.

Ellesmere’s coronation weekend is packed with activities to suit all ages and bring the community together for a ‘joyful celebration’.

The town mayor Councillor Anne Wignall said the organisation has been a community effort and thanked everyone for their help.

She said: “It takes a whole community to plan and run a weekend of celebrations and I want to thank everyone for their contribution.

“Thank you to the organisations, businesses, community groups and all the individuals who have helped to plan this exciting weekend.

“I hope everyone has a fantastic time.”

Here's what's planned so far

Friday, May 5

  • The celebrations kick off with the Cellar Church organising a children’s craft event to 'Make a Crown fit for a King'.
  • 7pm: St Mary’s Church will hold its special commemoration service to mark the coronation followed by refreshments.

Saturday, May 6

  • 10am onwards: King Charles lll’s coronation will take place in Westminster Abbey and the Market Hall will be live-screening the events in London as they unfold from 10am until late afternoon.

Sunday, May 7:

  • Oteley Gardens will be open during the day for a leisurely stroll followed by afternoon tea in the grounds.
  • The Comrades Club, in Victoria Street, is providing a magic show followed by family bingo with a special children’s session, including prizes throughout the day.
  • Until 6pm on May 7, there is a treasure hunt, Find the Crown Jewels, which will take place around the town with a prize at the end from Moolah, in Scotland Street. You can already make a start on this now.

Monday, May 8:

  • 12pm-4pm: The celebrations culminate in Ellesmere Town Council’s King’s Coronation Community Parade and community picnic at Beech Grove Recreation Ground. The parade will be led by real horses followed by a cavalry of red, white and blue hobby horses, all made at home or at the recent community workshop. Meanwhile entries to the Mayor’s Coronation Cake Competition will be judged and auctioned off in aid of Ellesmere Food Share and local youth organisations (they must be dropped off at the clubhouse between 10am and 11am). Maypole dancing and face painting will commence along with family sports, races and games. Entry is free and visitors are encouraged to bring their own picnics. Snacks and drinks will also be available from the Ellesmere Rangers clubhouse at Beech Grove.
