A REPAIR café held in Ellesmere for the first time has been deemed a ‘resounding success’ by organisers.

Around 12 ‘fixperts’ at the event carried out almost 60 repairs, according to Ellesmere town mayor Councillor Anne Wignall, across a number of items.

More than 100 visitors were treated to tea, coffee and a wide selection of delicious cakes served up by a hard-working catering team.

Organiser, David Brown, who used his repair skills to mend a visitor's bicycle, was delighted with the turn-out.

He said: "There was a great buzz in the room.

“When the call went out for volunteers, we had a great response and everyone pulled together to make this a successful event with many happy customers.

“The whole ethos is that we don't throw as much away as a society and repair, reuse and recycle when we can."

Cllr Wignall added: "I would like to thank everyone who supported this initiative.

“David and Amanda Weeks coordinated the project brilliantly with the support of a small committee, and the admin, caterers and fixperts did a fantastic job.

“We are very grateful to Nikki and Elaine from Oswestry and Borders Repair Cafe who provided guidance and practical support at the planning stages and on the day.”

The fixperts mended clocks, hoovers, wooden furniture, hair dryers and even a talking Father Christmas.

A team of sewing experts fixed many items of clothing by hand or machine while a glass expert carried out very intricate repairs of treasured possessions.

The next Repair Cafe will take place at Ellesmere Town Hall on Saturday, June 3 from 1-4pm, and then on every first Saturday of the month, except for May because of the coronation.

Repairs are free of charge but donations are very welcome and will help to cover running costs.
