ICELAND supermarket in Oswestry has implemented a new parking system after changes last year led to anger from some shoppers.

Iceland chief executive Richard Walker stepped in personally last year after some shoppers were hit with fines when a new system was implemented and an "unknown third party" covered over the ticketing machine.

Now the store has put in a new system in which a free maximum stay of two hours is permitted at the Oswald Road shop.

If exceeded and if shoppers fail to comply to the car park terms and conditions, a fine of £100 will be sent out.

Store manager Tom Stedman said: "I understand that people have been angry since the changes in the system last year, and I know we have lost some customers.

"But we hope with the new changes that customers will choose Iceland again."

The boss of British supermarket chain Iceland had to personally intervene in the row over parking fines at the company's Oswestry branch, in November 2022

A number of complaints had many shoppers taking it to Facebook to share their frustrations when faced with £100 fines from the food store.

And after months of appeals, Richard Walker, the store chain's managing director and the son of Malcolm Walker, who founded Iceland in Oswestry, stepped in to resolve the situation after being contacted by a town councillor – and he said part of the problem was caused by an "unknown third party" covering up the pay machine.

Now, the problem seems to be fixed after the store has scrapped the car park's meter.

Mr. Stedman added: "We hope this will fix the problem and people will slowly start to forget about the last year's issues."
