A CHANNEL 4 archaeology programme is making a comeback with an announcement of a possible big find at two Whittington landmarks.
Time Team has posted a video on Youtube back in November 2022, showing the behind the scenes of their work at the Halston Hall and Whittington Castle.
The archaeologists are hoping to find remains of a lost community of the Knights Hospitallers, which were the Scottish headquarters of the Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, also known as the Knights Hospitaller.
During the Dig Watch, a behind the scenes look at the Time Team’s work, watchers can already see some of the trenches and a couple of the test pits, and Tim Taylor, the series producers, explains how they got to the site in Whittington.
He said that they found records of a preceptory belonging to the Knights Hospitallers, who built a lot of ‘amazing’ buildings all throughout Europe.
Then Mr Taylor laid out their challenge which revolves around trying to find a structure under the ground that could have been there for over 700 years and he describes it as a ‘tough ask’ in a site this big.
The order sheltered the sick and poor visiting the Holy Land and gave military protection to pilgrims.
With the overwhelming support of their Patreons the Time Team has returned in an online version of the series, following the same pace as before.
Presented by actor Tony Robinson, each episode looked at a team of specialists carrying out the work over a period of three days, with Robinson explaining the process in much simpler terms.
The archaeologists have chosen Whittington Castle and Halston Hall, after their fans on Patreon voted in a poll, and it originally came to light thanks to the ‘landscape detective work’ by Stewart Ainsworth.
He explained that he is very happy with how the experts came together to untangle the ‘very, very’ confusing site.

The specialists changed throughout time but consistently included professional archaeologists such as Carenza Lewis, Mick Aston, Francis Pryor and Phil Harding.
And the team has looked at sites from the Palaeolithic all the way to the Second World War.
The Youtube video is only a pre-view into the actual show that is set to come out sometime in Spring 2023.
The Time Team will be posting it on their official Youtube chanel, for free.
