THE fundraiser for the family of a woman who was killed in Oswestry last weekend has upped its target after the original £5,000 milestone was passed.

Rebecca Steer, 22, died in the early hours of Sunday, October 9 when she was struck by a car in Willow Street.

A 27-year-old man, Stephen McHugh, was charged with her murder on Wednesday.

A Just Giving page was set up by Llanymynech Helping Hands, a community group from Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) student Rebecca's home village, with permission from her family, with an original £5,000 target.

But the target has now been lifted to £9,000 after donations reached £7,000 on Thursday, with the money being sent directly to Rebecca's family.

Organiser Duncan Borthwick thanked all for their donations.

He said: "Thank you so much to everyone who has donated so far.

"I have spoken with Becky’s family and they are incredibly appreciative of the care and outpouring of support shown at this time."

Donations included from Llanymynech Football Club, former teachers and businesses around Llanymech and in Oswestry.

Meanwhile, staff at LJMU, where Becky was a criminal justice undergraduate, described Becky as a “very special person, an exceptional student, friend and inspiration to many.”

A spokesperson said: “The whole university community is stunned and extremely saddened.

"Becky was an excellent, dedicated student with a real ambition to be a police officer. She was the one that stayed behind to ask questions after every session.

“A budding talent and admirable young woman, we were privileged to have her as a student.

“Becky will be sorely missed and our thoughts and prayers are with her loved ones at this tragic time.”

Anyone wishing to add their donations to the Just Giving fundraiser can do so here.
