REPAIRS to one of Oswestry's best-loved buildings are due to "start soon", months after scaffolding was erected around the site, Shropshire Council says.

Oswestry railway station has been wrapped in scaffolding for several months, as it awaits repairs following storm damage suffered by the grade II-listed building in Oswald Road earlier this year.

Shropshire Council says it has now completed all the structural surveys required, and has appointed a contractor that should start the repairs soon. The authority says work should be completed by the end of this year.

A spokesman for the council said: "Following the storm damage Shropshire Council carried out reactive works to the Grade II-listed building, which escalated the need for a full scaffold to allow access to the roof to carry out further investigations.

"A structural survey was completed with recommendations - in consultation with conservation colleagues - for repairs to the stone corbels/fascia and associated roof structure."

The spokesman added: "Following provision of the structural survey, the remedial works have been procured and appointed to a successful contractor.
