SHROPSHIRE Council has confirmed that double yellow lines in a major Oswestry road have been redrawn following a 'shabby' first effort.

After the surface of Beatrice Street in Oswestry was relaid earlier this month, eagle-eyed residents spotted that the new double yellow lines were enough to give pedestrians and drivers a headache.

The wobbly lines were spotted by one resident, Simon Calloway, who contacted The Advertizer to pass on his annoyance as what he called a 'lack of care' over the work carried out by Shropshire Council.

He said: "They looked so uneven – I don't know how they do lines normally but they must have some machine to draw them against curbs.

"They looked terrible – it was awful.

"The road looks so nice and smooth but to have that to finish on, it's unbelievable.

"We expect better for the town, and no one should have put up with it – it's shabby.

"Any painter can paint a wall, but a good painter doesn't get it on the wall or the ceiling."

However, after he complained to Shropshire Council via Social Media, the unitary authority has confirmed it has already rectified the work.

In a reply to his tweet, a council spokesman said: "We're aware of this and our contractors will be rectifying things tonight under a road closure.

"Thanks."

Users on the 'Oswestry...a funny old town' Facebook group also took to Social media to describe their shock at the 'wonkiness' of the lines.

Allen Edwards said: "Thought I was seeing things when I drove through Oswestry today but then I saw the photos doing the rounds on social media to confirm what I saw."

This spurred Oswestry mayor Councillor Jay Moore into action, and he thanked those, including Simon, who made their feelings known to Shropshire Council to force the immediate work to be done.

In a comment he said: "I'm glad he took [photos] and posted them.

"Entirely possible no intervention is needed, but we've all seen stuff like this get left in the past.

"It's a main road of our town and we're working really hard to improve things – details matter."

One user, Pauline Oliver, went for a cheekier approaching, saying: "Wonky lines, must be cheaper than straight lines."

Users were also grateful that pot holes in the road had been tackled.
