RESIDENTS in Oswestry are being encouraged to use a new free bus service running on Saturday mornings.
The town council has teamed up with Tanat Valley Coaches to offer the service which will visit residential areas for pick-ups before making drop-offs in the town centre.
It is hoped it encourage people to come into town and take advantage of a number of events taking place over the summer.
Jay Moore, the mayor of Oswestry, said: " The town council hopes that people of all ages will take up this offer and use the free travel that is available to them.
"A number of events are coming up in Cae Glas Park including a wellness event and Oswestry Balloon Carnival.
"Local residents are encouraged to use the free bus service into town on Saturday during these events as well as for everyday activities."
The new minibuses, which are already providing services around town, are fitted with all the modern-day mod cons including iPod docking stations.
Chris Chadd, managing director of Tanat Valley Coaches said: "We hope that this project will aid local residents living in the town to do their shopping or to reach those all-important facilities like doctor’s surgery and activities, such as those provided at Eastern Oswestry Community Centre and the Whole Life Centre.
"We are a local business and very much looking forward to working with the town council and providing local people with support."
This service should also help young people reach social activities in and around the town faster and safer.
The Saturday services will include the 400 Aston Way – Llys Road, 402 Balmoral Crescent ¬– Windsor Road, 403 Hampton Road Circular, and the 404 Vyrnwy Drive to Old Fort Road.
Oswestry Town Council is also looking into reconfiguring the existing bus service provision to meet local need and demand, and is seeking discussions with Shropshire Council in relation to this.
This would look at where young people need to get to and provide the transport for every-day activities between the town and community facilities and key infrastructure.
