CLWYD South MP Simon Baynes has declared his support for controversial Home Secretary Priti Patel in the upcoming Conservative Party leadership election.
Mr Baynes took to his Twitter account to explain why he was backing Mrs Patel in the leadership election, which is underway, to replace outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
Mr Baynes was also a staunch support of Mr Johnson and admitted he was 'sorry' to see his resignation last week.
But he has now thrown his support behind Mrs Patel, who has come in for criticism for the controversial refugees to Rwanda policy.
He said: "Our next PM must reflect our shared Conservative values and show a strong track record in government.
I think Priti Patel is the best person to do that.
"From recruiting more police to ending free movement, she understands people’s concerns.
"That’s why I am urging her to stand."
However, My Baynes will need a new contender to support after she pulled out of the running on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Mr Baynes was also this week appointed to Mrs Patel's ministry as a parliamentary under secretary of state at the Home Office.
